HR / IT self help portal: Closed Card sorting
Project description:
Create a new digital system to help employees find relevant information to HR and IT related questions

Project impact:
Enabled us to move forward with creating an information architecture for the system that would reflect the most common mental models across our core set of users.

1
Define the problem
Worked with stakeholders to define the problem space and decide what aspects of the overall experience is in an out of scope for this research. Established clear timelines based on the project team's needs and the scope of this research.

Problem Statement:
-
Verify that the information architecture created with input from open card-sort findings is valid across a larger sample of end users.
2
Create study plan
Define project background, business objectives, research objectives, timeline, and specific questions to ask participants during the study. Work with design, product, and development stakeholders to validate the information in the test plan and ensure the stakeholder's key questions are addressed.

Research objective:
-
Validate category labels created by end users in the open card sorting exercise

Study type:
-
Remote - unmoderated closed card sorting
3
Recruit and schedule participants
Recruited 50 users from R&D, IT, HR, Sales, & Operations. In multiple countries.
4
Run sessions
Used excel and a video conferencing app to remotely meet with participants. During the 1:1 sessions I presented a set of categories to end user based on the user generated categories from the closed-sort study. Then gave the participants the same set of topics as the closed-sort study. Participants were then instructed to add the topics to the categories that made the most sense to them. After participants completed the activity, outliers were discussed.
5
Analyze data
Brought all data into a single excel sheet. Compared taxonomy across all participants and noted differences. Looked for commonalities among the categories and created a new Information Architecture to accommodate the largest group of similar mental models.
6
Create presentation
Created a slide deck to share findings about what the information architecture of the new website should look like.
7
Present findings
Presented findings to design team leadership.
8
Follow-up
Started planning for an unmoderated tree test with a larger sample size.
